Day 86 - 100 days, 100 courses (Friday, June 7, 2019)

There are some wonderful muni course in this country and Laurel Hill should be on that list.

It's a very challenging course that plays every bit of its 139 rating (from the whites). There are lots of drastic elevation changes, some water and really tough rough.

The course was built on the grounds of an old prison. On more the one occasion, my ball was sent to solitary for bad behavior. I carded a 94 with 2 escaped prisoners

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Saved the best Public course for last and it was worth it. Course is run like a Country Club from starting on time, Ranger checking with us four (4) times, cart girl three (3) times. With six (6) tee selections from 7,102 / 74.6 / 146 down to 5,014 / 65.2 / 124 you can pick what’s comfortable, for your game, on this Par 36/35 course. We chose a mix between White’s at 6,386/71.4 and Golds at 6,021/69.7/134 because of forced carries and tee box locations. (6,245yds) The #6 Par 4 hole plays from 500yds to 366yds is a great example, we chose the gold at 418yds. The #14 Par 3 plays 215 to 125yds and is a well protected, full carry uphill green, sitting on a knoll. Then after surviving #14 facing #15 Par 5 you can pick anywhere’s between 612-493yds on this uphill climb tee to green. The fairway landing areas are fair and wide enough (35-50yds) but have well placed traps to catch those strays. White grainy sand with firm bottoms (1” fluff) are ready for your arrival but consistent and predictable when hitting from them. (This I know). Even though rain left it’s mark a little on the fairway low spots, good grass was never a real problem. Greens were smooth/holding and rolling around 8-9 with only ball marks from previous thoughtless players. The #18 Par 5 (441-589yds) that wraps around a pond (RH side) with plenty of sand traps will leave a memory for sure. Can’t say enough of Greg, my playing partner, who volunteers and plays on a regular basis, with yardage tips. Ended up shooting 41/39 w/31putts on one great course that you must play, if in the area. Did I mention the U.S. Amateur Public Links was played here in 2013, I know why.

A little pricier than most Fiarfax County Golf courses, but a superb layout with many challenging holes. Fun to play. We paid a discounted price for the round we played on a Friday, not the normal rate. The best of the County courses I have played.

I've played this course about a half dozen times before, but it was the first time for my 28-year-old son, so I was telling him the challenges at the beginning of each hole. About hole #14 it dawned on me that every hole had it's own particular character and my appreciation of the course had grown throughout the round. It's an attractive course, but more than that, it's a player's course that offers lots of different looks. At the end of the day I felt challenged but not beat up.

This course has it all....great conditions, great staff, great golf. Choose a different set of tees and get a different golf course. It plays well to all levels, and especially fair to golfers who play the forward tees.
